A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the national strategic innovation program Swedish Mining Innovation and the Chilean mining company Codelco. The official announcement of the memorandum was made by Sweden’s Ambassador in Chile Oscar Stenström at the Swedish Mining Initiative Chile on 3 December, which aims to increase collaboration between Codelco and actors in the Swedish mining cluster.

The Memorandum of Understanding shall promote cooperation in sustainability, innovation and profitable mining and create conditions for joint projects.

Jenny Greberg, program director at Swedish Mining Innovation, is pleased that they have succeeded in concluding a memorandum of understanding regarding cooperation with the mining giant Codelco in Chile. When Swedish Mining Innovation began work on developing more international collaboration a few years ago, the programme’s board prioritized Chile. Codelco is an internationally leading mining company with a strong focus on development and high ambitions in terms of sustainability and efficiency. Another reason for prioritizing collaboration with Chile is the good relations that exist, and great support and cooperation with Business Sweden in Chile.

– This is the first time that we have entered into a formal collaboration agreement with a foreign company. We have high expectations and look forward to the exciting opportunities that the agreement entails. On the whole, this memorandum opens up for broad collaboration but at the same time does not promise too much. Chile is one of the countries we prioritize for international cooperation, and now we can more easily gather strength and jointly drive innovation and technological development to meet the global challenges, says Jenny Greberg.

Julio Diaz, Corporate innovation manager at Codelco says he is very enthusiastic about the agreement, which will promote cooperation through various kinds of meetings, participation in events and the exchange of delegations between countries. He sees great opportunities for collaborations in gender equality, security, productivity and also to improve efficiency in the mining sector.

The program also sees this collaboration as a pilot for future collaborations with other interesting mining nations and international mining companies.
